John Agar

John Agar first came to fame when he married actress Shirley Temple, a marriage that later fell apart due to his battles with alcohol. The 24-year-old Agar first met Temple when he was asked by producer David O. Selznick to escort the then 16-year-old Temple to a Hollywood party. They ended up marrying before the year was out. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Agar was the oldest of four children of meat packer John Agar, Sr. and Lillian Rogers Agar. He attended Chicago's Harvard School for Boys in Chicago and Trinity-Pawling Prep School in Pawling, New York. After serving for three years in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he was a physical training instructor, Agar signed with Selznick for a string of box office heavyweights, including Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Sands of Iwo Jima. His other films include Attack of the Puppet People, Chisum, Divided We Fall, and Nightbreed.
