Wes Craven

Wesley Earl "Wes" Craven (born August 2, 1939 - died August 30, 2015) was without a doubt one of the biggest horror film directors, though the quality in his film production been anything but uniform. Craven grew up in a Fundamentalist Baptist household, never being allowed to watch movies until he was a teenager. He then went to Wheaton College for a year before coming down with transpolar myelitis, a spinal cord infection that left him paralyzed from the waist down for three months. After recuperating, he returned to Wheaton and graduated in 1963, attaining a master's degree in philosophy. When the moviemaking bug bit him, he quit his teaching job and began looking for work in cinema. This search led him to filmmaker Sean Cunningham, with whom he worked on two projects. The first, Together (1970), was a soft-core sex film that made moderate business. The film's distributors, Vanguard Pictures, saw their combined talent and offered the two a sizable sum to make a horror film. The duo pooled all of their resources and came up with $90,000 - far more than enough to make 1972's infamous Last House on the Left. Craven then created another horror film in 1977 called The Hills have Eyes, which spawned a sequel, but still had him lurking around the shadows of Hollywood. He muddled around in the industry, creating more and more movies, none of them really catching on until 1984. This was the year that Wes dreamed up Freddy Krueger, and A Nightmare on Elm Street was born. It became an instant success and Craven suddenly hit it big. Following his burst with success, he created Deadly Friend in 1986, The Serpent and the Rainbow in '88, and Shocker in '89. As the years passed by, the Freddy Krueger franchise was going along quite well without Craven's help. It had been followed by five sequels, the last one touting the "death" of old Fred. Wes knew the legend couldn't die without him, so in 1994, he leapt back into the director's chair to create the definitive Krueger film, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which also had him in it, playing himself. Wes has also had small acting parts in John Carpenter's Body Bags (1993), The Fear (1995), and Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001). Fans with a particularly keen eye can also find him small cameo roles in both Scream (1996) and Scream 2 (1997). In a time when making horror is simple, but selling it is nearly impossible, Wes Craven always seems to find a way. His 1996 horror film, Scream, grossed more than any film ever released by its distributor, Miramax, and marked a new interest in the horror genre. Craven has since helmed Scream 2 (1997), which has currently out-grossed the original, and Scream 3 (2000), which supposedly finished off his trendy trilogy. Wes' first novel, The Fountain Society, debuted in 1999, showing fans and critics alike that there was a well-educated brain inside this creepy director's head. With several new plans on the drawing board, Wes is always ready for something that will entertain and spook his millions of fans. He plans to limit his work with horror in the future and concentrate on other genres, but with his lifetime of scares, it seems unlikely that he would ever completely abandon his beloved movies. So, if horror is going to die, Craven will have to go first. With him behind the camera, the terror will never stop. A FACT ABOUT CRAVEN One of Wes' strangest moviemaking experiences occurred on the set of his second directorial project, The Hills Have Eyes (1977). A scene required one of the actors to disembowel a dog, so Craven attained a the body of a deceased German shepherd from a rendering plant in L.A. After taking the corpse to the desert locale and setting up the shot under the hot summer sun, everyone became so disgusted that it had to be abandoned. The animal was consequently buried on the set, much to the relief of all those involved.
