Benicio Del Toro was born in San German, Puerto Rico and spent much of his childhood in nearby Santurce. At the age of thirteen, he moved to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania where he attended Mercersburg Academy. It was while attending the University of California at San Diego that he became involved in the university's stage productions and changed his major to acting. He eventually dropped out all together to study in New York at the Circle in the Square Theatre School. Del Toro went on to win a scholarship to The Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting. The lead role in the Los Angles production of the play Orphans brought him an audition for the James Bond film Licence To Kill and launched his film career.
