American cinema has produced a lot of classic horror movies that have become cult favorites. In true Hollywood fashion, though, a good movie needs a sequel that is equally as good. Whether it is a next chapter or the return of an unstoppable killer, here are the top ten horror sequels.
Score: 100%
EnlargeEvil Dead 2 – The first Evil Dead introduced us to the character Ash and was handled as serious horror. But this sequel adds a little humor along with the gore. Ash’s has a girlfriend who turns into a zombie after reading from the book, the Necronomicon.
Score: 100%
EnlargeWes Craven's New Nightmare – The best thing about this sequel is it brought Freddy back to his horror roots. No more funny puns delivered in Arnold Schwarzenegger fashion. Plus, Freddy is now roaming the real world, not the fictional film world where he started.
Score: 100%
EnlargeDawn of the Dead – George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead invented the zombie film. His sequel brought the zombies out into the daylight. As good as Night was, many fans consider the sequel superior.
Score: 100%
EnlargeHellbound: Hellraiser 2 – The first movie introduced us to the acupuncture nightmare Pinhead, the Cenobites, and a mysterious puzzle box. The daughter of two of the victims from the first film is placed in a mental hospital. A doctor there is searching for a dimensional doorway and uses her tries to find the puzzle box.
Score: 100%
EnlargeFriday the 13th: The Final Chapter – When the unstoppable Jason revives himself at the local hospital, he escapes and makes his way back to Crystal Lake. Once there, he once again begins to kill the campers. But when he goes after a little boy and his sister, the boy proves to be tougher than the hockey masked killer.
Score: 100%
EnlargeHalloween 2 – John Carpenter created a masterpiece with the first Halloween. This sequel takes up right after the events of the first film. Michael Myers returns to wreak havoc on a hospital.
Score: 100%
EnlargeJaws 2 – The first film kept me out of the water all summer long. The sequel, thankfully, was more than just a rehash. This time the shark is bigger and even takes down a killer whale.
Score: 50%
EnlargeCreepshow 2 – This sequel brought us another set of horror short stories that were just as good as the first. The stories include a demonic wooden Indian, a blob that attacks rafters on a lake, and a ghastly hitchhiker that won’t die. The interludes show a boy who loves his venus flytraps.
