We all love to see the crazy killer chasing teenagers around the darkened landscape. But sometimes the killers are animals instead of humans. They may be mutated or they may be just big and mean, but for the best animal flicks, I’ve put together a list of the top ten animal horror movies. You can also check out the big list of natural horror movies.

Jaws

Jaws (1975) – People have always been afraid of sharks and with good reason. When a giant great white shows up, he has an appetite that just can’t be filled. One of the best finale’s (even if a bit unbelievable) in horror film history.

The Birds

Score: 100%

The Birds (1963) – Alfred Hitchcock is the master of suspense. When he took a rather ludicrous idea of birds that go crazy, he manages to make it dramatic and real. It’ll teach you not to go outside to do some bird-watching.

Cujo

Score: 100%

Cujo (1983) – Based on a book by Stephen King, it features a 200 pound St. Bernard that contracts rabies. When the dog finally goes bonkers, he makes a mess of everyone in his path. If only he had gotten that annoying kid in the end.

Willard

Score: 100%

Willard (1971) – This is the movie for rat lovers. Willard is a socially inept young man who befriends a group of rats. When his boss kills his favorite rat, he sends the others for revenge.

King Kong

Score: 100%

King Kong (1933) – Forget the Peter Jackson remake with its panoramic views that lasted for three hours. The black and white film from 1933 is still the best. Who couldn’t love a giant ape who takes his true to the top of the Empire State Building?

Pet Sematary

Score: 100%

Pet Sematary (1989) – Another film based off a Stephen King book, it proves that when someone tells you to stay out of somewhere, you darn well better listen. When the family cat gets killed, the father buries it in a magic cemetery hoping to bring it back to life for his son. But when the cat comes back, he is anything but friendly.

Lake Placid

Score: 100%

Lake Placid (1999) – Not only does the film feature a giant crocodile that eats people, it is pretty funny, too. When people start getting killed, investigators discover a giant croc is the culprit. It features Betty White in a hilarious role as the croc’s guardian.

Arachnophobia

Score: 100%

Arachnophobia (1990) – We really didn’t need a movie to make us any more afraid of spiders but that is exactly what Arachnophobia does. A queen spider lays her eggs in a barn and her poisonous offspring start killing townsfolk. The end with a hissing rubber spider is a little lame, though.

Empire of Ants

Score: 100%

Empire of Ants (1977) – This oldie-but-a-goodie from 1977 is a surprisingly fun movie. It is an homage to the nuclear monster movies from the 50’s. Giant mutated ants terrorize real estate investors in Florida, including a young Joan Collins.

Snakes on a Plane

Score: 50%

Snakes on a Plane (2006) – The thought of being trapped in a confined space where you cannot get away from venomous snakes is enough to give you a bad case of the creeps. A crime lord loads a plane with snakes in order to kill a witness. Samuel Jackson not only has to survive but has to help land the plane.
