Focus Features has released a new trailer for Werwulf, the upcoming horror movie written and directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, Nosferatu). Taking place in 13th-century England, the film takes a different approach to werewolf mythology, moving away from many of the familiar conventions that have shaped lycanthrope cinema over the years.
Werwulf is set around the year 1300 and follows a mysterious creature terrorizing the region as local folklore begins to take on a terrifying reality. Eggers has explained that the historical setting allowed him to build a mythology distinct from the traditional werewolf stories seen on screen, leaving out elements such as the werewolf bite and silver bullets.
The director also gave the film a distinctive visual approach. Werwulf was shot on 35mm, with an orthochromatic treatment applied in post-production to alter skin tones, while grain associated with black-and-white film was incorporated into the color footage to create a specific visual texture.
The cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu), Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Ralph Ineson (The Witch) and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (Hamnet).
The screenplay was written by Eggers together with Icelandic writer and poet Sjón, following their previous collaboration on The Northman (2022). Eggers has also described the script as the darkest thing he has ever written.
Werwulf will open in U.S. theaters on December 25, followed by its Italian theatrical release on January 1, 2027 through Focus Features.
